Your filter is not simply an accessory fitted beside the pump. It is the part of the circulation system that captures material before it settles on the floor, clouds the water or feeds algae growth. Choosing, maintaining or replacing one properly can save repeated call-outs, wasted chemicals and avoidable equipment costs.
How a pool filter works
Water is drawn from the skimmers and main drain by the pump, then pushed through the filter before returning to the pool through the inlet jets. During that journey, the filter traps leaves, grit, pollen, insects, dust and smaller suspended particles.
The pump and filter must be correctly matched. A powerful pump connected to an undersized filter can force water through too quickly, reducing filtration quality and increasing pressure in the system. An oversized filter is not normally a problem, but it may be unnecessary for a small pool unless longer cleaning intervals or very high bather use justify it.
For most domestic pools, the target is to circulate the full water volume within around six to eight hours. Pools with heavy use, warm water, nearby trees or frequent wind-blown dust may need longer daily running times. During peak summer use, filtration often needs to run for much of the day rather than only a short morning cycle.
The three main types of pool filter
The best choice depends on pool size, available plant-room space, how much hands-on maintenance you want and local water conditions. There is no single filter that suits every property.
Sand filters
Sand filters are the most familiar option for many residential and commercial pools. Water passes through a tank filled with specially graded filter media, traditionally silica sand. The media catches debris, while clean water returns to the pool.
They are popular because they are dependable, straightforward to operate and well suited to regular use. When pressure rises, the filter is cleaned by backwashing: reversing the water flow to flush trapped debris to waste. This makes sand filters a practical choice for pools that collect leaves, dust or frequent bather debris.
The trade-off is water use. Backwashing consumes water, and the process needs to be carried out correctly to avoid wasting more than necessary. Filter sand also needs replacing periodically, usually every few years depending on use, water chemistry and maintenance. Glass filter media can be a worthwhile upgrade for some owners, offering improved filtration performance and potentially reduced backwash requirements.
Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters contain one or more pleated fabric elements. As water passes through the material, particles are caught in the folds. Instead of backwashing, the cartridges are removed and rinsed with a hose when dirty.
They are especially useful where water conservation matters, as there is no routine backwash cycle. They can also capture finer particles than standard sand media, helping deliver polished-looking water. Their compact footprint makes them a strong option where plant-room space is limited.
However, cartridges need proper cleaning rather than a quick rinse when oils, sunscreen and scale build up. A neglected cartridge restricts flow, puts pressure on the pump and can leave the water dull. Most cartridges eventually need replacement, and the cost varies widely by size and quality. Keeping a spare set can make maintenance easier for busy homeowners or property managers.
Diatomaceous earth filters
Diatomaceous earth, often shortened to DE, filters can remove very fine particles and are valued for exceptionally clear water. They use a powder made from fossilised microscopic organisms to coat internal grids or elements.
Their filtration performance is excellent, but they demand more care than sand or cartridge systems. The filter must be opened and serviced correctly, the DE media needs topping up after cleaning, and waste disposal must be handled responsibly. For many private pools, the extra maintenance is not necessary. For pools where pristine water clarity is the priority and professional servicing is available, DE may be the right fit.
Choosing the right filter for your pool
Start with water volume and pump flow rate, not the appearance of the existing tank. A filter should be rated to handle the pump’s flow at a sensible turnover rate. If the pool has been extended, fitted with a heater, converted to salt water or upgraded with additional water features, the original filter may no longer be appropriate.
Also consider how the pool is used. A second-home pool that is covered for long periods has different demands from a busy villa pool used by children and guests every day. A pool beside pine trees or landscaped gardens will receive more debris than an enclosed courtyard pool. Commercial and community pools need equipment chosen for heavier, more consistent loading.
Accessibility matters too. If the plant area is difficult to reach, a cartridge system requiring regular removal may be less convenient than a sand filter with a properly installed waste line. Conversely, where drainage is restricted or water use needs to be kept low, cartridge filtration may be the more practical long-term option.
Signs your pool filter needs attention
Cloudy water does not always mean the filter is at fault, but it should never be ignored. Poor circulation, incorrect chemical balance, a worn pump impeller or algae can create similar symptoms. A professional assessment looks at the whole system rather than replacing parts on guesswork.
Common warning signs include rising pressure on the gauge, weak flow from return jets, debris returning to the pool after backwashing, frequent cloudy water, air in the pump basket or leaks around the multiport valve and filter tank. A cracked lateral inside a sand filter, for example, can allow sand back into the pool. A split cartridge can let debris bypass the filter completely.
If the pressure is low rather than high, the issue may be a suction-side blockage, air leak or pump problem. If pressure rises quickly again after backwashing or cleaning, the media may be clogged, compacted or overdue for replacement. These details matter because the wrong fix can create further damage.
A practical pool filter maintenance routine
Check the pressure gauge at least weekly during the swimming season and make a note of the normal clean running pressure. The actual number varies between installations. What matters is the change from your usual baseline. Many filters need cleaning when pressure rises by roughly 20 to 25 per cent.
Empty skimmer baskets and the pump basket regularly, particularly after windy weather or garden work. Keeping large debris out of the system improves circulation and protects the pump. Sand filters should be backwashed only when required, then rinsed briefly before returning to normal filtration. Excessive backwashing wastes water and can disturb the filter bed.
Cartridge elements should be rinsed carefully from top to bottom between pleats. Avoid high-pressure cleaning that damages the fabric. Periodic deep cleaning removes body oils, sunscreen residue and mineral deposits that ordinary rinsing will not shift. For DE filters, follow the manufacturer’s servicing procedure and use the correct quantity of media.
Water chemistry and filtration work together. Even a new filter cannot compensate for poor chlorine levels, incorrect pH, high calcium hardness or inadequate circulation time. Likewise, adding more chemicals will not solve water that is constantly bypassing a damaged or undersized filter.
Upgrading an ageing filtration system
A filter upgrade can make sense before total failure. Older systems may have inefficient pumps, seized valves, brittle pipework or media that no longer filters effectively. A modern correctly sized filter, combined with a variable-speed pump or salt chlorination system where suitable, can improve water quality and reduce day-to-day effort.
