A clean pool can develop an unsightly mark surprisingly quickly. A brown line near the water level, a scattering of black spots in the grout or a blue-green patch on the steps may look like the same problem, but the right treatment depends entirely on the cause. Understanding what causes pool staining helps prevent wasted chemicals, unnecessary draining and damage to tiles, liners or render.

Pool stains are not always superficial dirt. Some are caused by material sitting on the surface, while others are chemical reactions within the pool water or the finish itself. Before attempting to scrub or treat a stain, it is worth identifying its colour, location and how quickly it appeared.

What Causes Pool Staining in the First Place?

Most staining falls into one of three groups: organic staining, metal staining and surface-related staining. Water chemistry often makes each of these problems worse, especially where pH, chlorine, alkalinity or calcium levels have been left unchecked.

The same visible mark can have different causes. For example, a brown stain might be caused by leaves left in the pool after windy weather, but it could also be iron in the water supply or corrosion from ageing equipment. This is why a professional assessment is often more cost-effective than trying several treatments at random.

Organic material and garden debris

Leaves, berries, blossom, soil and pollen are common causes of staining, particularly in pools surrounded by mature gardens. When organic material settles on the floor or in corners, its natural tannins can leave yellow, brown, green or reddish marks. The longer it remains in place, the more likely it is to stain porous grout, render and older pool finishes.

Algae can also leave a stain-like appearance. Green algae is usually easy to recognise, but black algae can form stubborn dark spots that root into rough plaster, tile grout and small surface imperfections. Mustard algae may look more like sand or yellow-brown dust, often collecting in shaded areas or on steps.

Good circulation, regular brushing and prompt removal of debris make a genuine difference. A pool cover can reduce the amount of falling material entering the water, although it still needs to be cleaned and maintained so that debris does not wash back into the pool when it is opened.

Metals in the water

Metal staining is one of the most frustrating issues for pool owners because the water can look perfectly clear while the surface develops coloured marks. Iron typically causes orange, rust-coloured or brown stains. Copper can create turquoise, blue-green, grey or even black marks. Manganese may leave dark brown or black staining.

Metals can enter a pool through source water, borehole water, corroding copper components, old heaters, poor-quality chemicals or some algaecides. Copper-based products may control algae in the short term, but repeated use can increase the risk of metal staining, especially if water balance is poor.

A sudden stain after topping up the pool is a useful clue. If the pool has been filled or heavily topped up with water containing iron or other metals, a change in pH or chlorination can cause those metals to oxidise and settle onto the pool surface. The answer is not always aggressive brushing. Depending on the finish, that can make matters worse.

Poor water balance

Balanced water protects both the pool and its equipment. When pH is too high, minerals and metals are more likely to come out of solution and form deposits or stains. When pH or total alkalinity is too low, water can become corrosive, potentially damaging metal fittings, heaters, grout and finishes.

High calcium levels can create white or grey scale deposits, often around the waterline, on tiles and inside equipment. Scale is not technically a stain, but it traps dirt and can make a pool appear dull or permanently marked. In time, it may affect water flow, heating performance and the efficiency of salt chlorinators.

Salt water pools still require regular testing and adjustment. Salt systems produce chlorine, but they do not remove the need to manage pH, stabiliser, calcium and alkalinity. In fact, pH can naturally rise in a salt pool, so routine maintenance is essential to avoid scale and staining problems.

Surface Ageing Can Make Stains Harder to Remove

A smooth, well-maintained pool surface is easier to keep clean. As tiles lose glaze, grout becomes porous, a liner ages or a rendered finish becomes rough, dirt and minerals find more places to cling to. What begins as a simple surface mark can then become embedded.

Cracked grout, missing tiles and loose coping can also allow moisture and contaminants behind the finish. In some cases, marks around cracks or joints point to a deeper repair issue rather than a cleaning issue. Treating the visible stain without dealing with the failed grout, tile adhesive or water ingress may only offer a temporary improvement.

This is where the trade-off matters. A strong acid wash may brighten a heavily stained rendered pool, but it also removes a fine layer of the surface. It is not a routine cleaning method and may be unsuitable for certain finishes. Tile, mosaic, vinyl liner and painted pools each need their own approach. A careful inspection protects the surface and avoids turning a cosmetic concern into a renovation job.

Waterline marks are usually a clue

The waterline is where oils, sunscreen, body products, dust and fine airborne pollution collect. A grey, brown or black ring may be simple scum, especially during frequent use in warmer months. However, a rough white crust often suggests calcium scale, while an orange-brown line can indicate iron.

Regular cleaning with a product suitable for the pool finish helps stop the waterline becoming permanent. Avoid household cleaners or abrasive pads unless they are known to be safe for your particular surface. Some products can damage grout, strip protective coatings or react with pool chemicals.

Equipment faults and hidden corrosion

A stain may be the first sign that an equipment issue needs attention. Corroding heater components, damaged metal fittings, failing lights or unsuitable pipework can release metals into the water. Poor filtration and weak circulation allow debris and fine particles to settle in the same places repeatedly.

If stains return soon after cleaning, it is sensible to look beyond the pool shell. Filter condition, pump run times, circulation patterns and chemical dosing all affect whether contaminants are removed or given time to settle. For second-home owners and property managers, regular service visits can be particularly valuable because problems are identified before they become obvious to guests or tenants.

How to Identify a Pool Stain Before Treating It

Colour alone is not enough, but it provides a starting point. Brown, red or orange stains often suggest organic tannins or iron. Blue-green and dark grey marks may point towards copper. Black spots can be black algae, manganese or staining around corroding fixtures. White, rough patches are more likely to be scale.

Consider where the stain is located. A mark directly beneath a tree or beside a skimmer may be organic. A stain around a metal fitting, light or return jet could indicate corrosion. Evenly distributed marks after a water top-up may indicate metals in the source water. A professional water test, together with an inspection of the pool surface and equipment, is the most reliable way to separate these possibilities.

Do not simply add more chlorine in the hope that every stain will disappear. Chlorine can help with algae and organic contamination, but it will not solve metal staining and can sometimes make metal precipitation more visible. Likewise, acid-based products may remove scale but can damage delicate finishes if used incorrectly.

Preventing Stains Without Making Pool Care Complicated

Prevention is mostly about consistency. Remove leaves and debris before they settle, brush walls and steps regularly, keep the filtration system running for an appropriate period and test water balance routinely. After storms, heavy garden work or a large pool party, give the pool extra attention rather than waiting for the next scheduled clean.

If your source water is known to contain metals, testing it before a major refill can prevent a difficult staining episode. If you are considering a salt conversion, new heater, replacement pump or pool renovation, it is also a good time to review water treatment and circulation as a whole.
